STEENS MOUNTAIN PACKERS

Horseback adventure Programs 2006

Two to Five Day Wilderness Cow Camp horseback adventures

Experience the romantic lifestyle of the Buckaroo. We now have the opportunity to offer you two to five day horseback adventures that take you into, and overnight at, the actual working cow camps of the Historic Kiger and Mann Lake Ranch's. Cow Camps are the camps where the ranches buckaroos actually work out of and many times spend their entire summers. This is the real deal. These are not dude ranches. These ranches have given Steens Mountain Packers the privileged opportunity to share their place and this experience with you. It is truly a unique chance to see a part of Steens that few ever see including rides into Kiger Gorge. Enjoy traveling into the backcountry of Steens Mountain through high alpine meadows and aspen groves. This trip is all inclusive from the time you arrive with all your meals, guides, tents, horses and tack supplied. You need only bring your personal items, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. Sleeping bags and pads are also available for rent at Lake Creek Base Camp. Some restrictions apply: 225 lb weight limit and minimum age of 8 years old.

It’s 170,000 acres of wilderness area is a masterpiece holding deep aspen groves and open meadows, glacial-cut valleys and sheer cliffs, lakes and mountain streams so clear it's unreal.

It's native red-band trout, bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, antelope, sagehens, wildhorses and over 300 species of birds. It's a miles-and-miles vista from the peak,

or an inch-wide close up of iridescent wildflowers.

Steens Mountain is nearly 10,000 feet high and over 30 miles long, an enormous fault block that rose up millions of years ago to cut a bold line between the greener western slope of the Blitzen Valley and the Alvord Desert to the east. Here you find the Kiger, Little Blitzen and Big Indian Gorges, all formed by massive prehistoric glaciers.
