There
were also Irish sheep men on the Steens, such as TIM O'KEEFFE who
came to the United States as a single man in 1927 from Canada to Buffalo,
New York by railroad. He was born in County Cork, Ireland on
September 2, 1902 and worked first for Folly Farm, in the east side
of Steens area, and on January 10, 1941, at the age of 38 applied
for American citizenship in Burns, Oregon. His
brother BEN was a major sheep owner on the south side of the Steens
Mountain. In the carving example shown here, the "O"
is placed closer to the first name making it harder to distinguish
the letters as a first and last name.
